Staying Independent After Children

Contrary to what society likes to say, there is no fixed age to become a parent or to start a family. Not everyone can be ready in their 20s or even 30s for that matter because let’s face it, becoming a parent is not easy. You are more than just someone who provides to your children, you’re also their emotional support, their confidant and you have to be everything for them until they are old enough to move out. Even after than happens, the job of a parent is never really done.

One common trend that happens with couples after they have children is that they seem to let themselves go. Their entire life revolves around their children and their family so much so to the extent that they forget about themselves and their individual needs. Yes, children, regardless of what their age might be, are demanding. There is also the added stress of a job and/or dealing with handling a house, and by the end of the day you are so tired, you end up crashing on the bed the minute you get some free time to yourself.

It is very important for you to confine yourself to just being a parent. You have a completely separate identity outside of your children and your marriage, and it is important that you adhere to that identity or else it can seriously affect your wellbeing. So, it is okay to take some time out each for yourself. It could be 10 minutes or one hour, take that time to do something you want. Try a different restaurant, go for yoga or running. Your emotional wellbeing is as equally important as any task and you want to maintain it in order to have a balanced life, lastly, breathe.
